Why do I forget what I learn?

Because reading something is not the same as being able to retrieve it, and only retrieval builds the path back. Memory for passively studied material drops sharply within a day. Two habits reverse most of it: testing yourself instead of rereading, and spacing those tests out rather than massing them.

Forgetting is the default state, and it is fast

The forgetting curve is one of the oldest results in psychology and one of the few that has survived being re-run. The modern replication found most of the loss happens inside the first day, with a small jump upwards around the 24-hour mark that the authors put down to sleep.1

Two caveats, because this is the graph most often oversold. It was measured on nonsense syllables, so the exact percentages do not transfer to anything meaningful you are learning. And it describes material that was studied and then left alone — which is precisely the condition the rest of this page is about avoiding. The shape is real. The numbers are not yours.

The feeling of knowing is not knowing

Rereading a chapter makes it feel familiar, and familiarity feels exactly like competence from the inside. This is why the most popular study habits are the least effective ones: in the review that ranked ten techniques by evidence, underlining, rereading and mnemonic devices all came out with surprisingly low utility, while practice testing and distributed practice were the two rated as broadly useful across ages and abilities.2

The uncomfortable part is that the effective techniques feel worse while you do them. Retrieving something you half-know is effortful and it produces errors, and that effort is the mechanism rather than a side effect.3 If a study session feels smooth, it is usually recognition wearing recall's clothes.

  • Rereading — feels productive, changes little.
  • Highlighting — feels like triage, mostly marks what you already noticed.
  • Retrieval from a blank page — feels bad, works.
  • The same retrieval a week later — feels worse, works better.

What to do instead, in the order that matters

Two habits carry almost all of the effect, and neither of them needs an app. The first is to close the material and write down what you remember before you look. The second is to do that again after a gap, and to let the gap grow.

The third thing, which is the one people skip, is to produce something rather than to answer about something. A quiz question tests whether the idea comes back. A piece of real work tests whether it comes back in the right place, under the conditions you will actually need it, and that is a different and harder question. The brief below is 75 minutes and is marked against 4 published criteria, which is the difference between a retrieval attempt and a graded one.

  • Close the book. Write what you remember. Then check.
  • Repeat after a day, then a week, then a month.
  • Do the harder version — build the thing, do not answer about the thing.
  • When you get it wrong, write the correction in your own words.

How this product handles it, so you can copy it or ignore it

Every session here opens with retrieval items drawn from work you did earlier, scheduled by when the system expects you to be about to lose them rather than by a fixed calendar. Skills you have proved decay in the record if you never touch them again, and the ones close to lapsing come back round.

That is a mechanism you can run yourself on paper, and the paper version works. Questions that come with this one

Is a bad memory the reason I keep forgetting?

Almost never. The forgetting curve is the normal case for material that was studied and then left alone, and it is steep for everybody. What varies between people is mostly whether they retrieve and space, not raw memory.

How long should the gap between reviews be?

Longer each time, and long enough that recall is effortful. A day, then about a week, then about a month is a reasonable start. If it comes back instantly the gap was too short to be doing much.

Do flashcards work for skills, not just facts?

Partly. They are excellent for the vocabulary layer — what a term means, what a function does — and weak for anything with judgement in it. For those, the retrieval that works is producing a small piece of the real thing.

Why do I remember things I struggled with?

Because struggling is retrieval. Effortful recall, including recall that fails and then gets corrected, is what strengthens the route back.3 Smooth study sessions feel better and leave less behind.
